This first release by The Hoochie Coochie Men is a mixture of classic blues compositions new and old. The track listing consists of remakes dating all the way back to one of the original blues masters Willie Dixon. The blues, unlike most modern music, stems more out of emotion than actual music talent. Either you feel it or you don't. That is one of the first things you really pick up on this release. These guys have a deep love and fondness for this style of music. Not counting the fact that the listener can play this CD continuously, but also that the bands versions of songs like; "I Just Want to Make Love To You", "Dallas", "Strange Brew", and "You Need Love", (which by the way, is done the way it should be, and not butchered like the Led Zeppelin version) will literally make the hair stand on the back of your neck. I mentioned earlier in the review about the bands fondness for the blues. This is notable the most with the four tracks they wrote themselves. It sounds like the band really locked into a solid groove and just went from there. From start to finish this release is 100 percent greatness all around, and can be purchased here The Hoochie Coochie Men.

Classic Rock Newswire - Hoochie Coochie Men Review

A blues based project featuring Bob Daisley (Rainbow/Ozzy/Uriah Heep/Mother’s Army) on bass, Rob Grossner on drums and Tim Gaze on guitars/vocals. The album is a mixture of covers plus a few new compositions. The Willie Dixon standard, ‘I Just Wanna Make Love To You’ starts things off in fine style. The blues chugging of ‘Six Strings Down’ is up next, with some nice Hammond organ from Mike Grubb. ‘24/7 Blues’ is a new song – a slow burning blues song, with a fine vocal performance from Tim Gaze. The Johnny Winter cover, ‘Dallas’ has some nice acoustic slide guitar, with harmonica from Jim Conway. ‘The Walk’ is a great slice of blues strutting, with a heavy bass line rumbling through the track.

There is a slower version of Cream’s standard ‘Strange Brew’, with another great vocal performance from Tim Gaze. Another new song is ‘Playin’ the Blues’, an uptempo rhythm and blues number, similar to solo artist Colin James or Jeff Healey. ‘You Need Love’ is the Willie Dixon song that inspired Led Zeppelin’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’. Very different from the Led Zep version, more mellower and no crunching guitar riffs. Album closer is the Bob Daisley penned ‘New Old Lady Blues’, again with some lovely slide work.

A quality blues album and cover versions that live their own life, as opposed to straight re-runs of the originals that you sometimes get with covers. The new songs stand up well and add to the album. If you like blues rock, similar to Colin James or Jeff Healey give this a try.

THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE MEN

After 32 years apart former Ozzy bassist/mastermind Bob Daisley, and one time Rose Tattoo guitarist Tim Gaze reunite with some friends, and kick out one mean, gritty blues CD straight from Down Under. Blending a few originals with a handful of blues standards the band indeed wheel out the goods in fine fashion. On the Hoochie penned "Playin’ The Blues," Daisley lays down a foundation much like Paul McCartney’s early bass motoring, and the band’s take on Willie Dixon’s "You Need Love," is so natural it sounds like it could have been recorded at some lonely crossroads. The liner notes even point the finger right at Zeppelin for scammin’ Dixon’s credit on Zeppelin II with "Whole Lotta Love" - hinting of another royalties lawsuit that Daisley’s embroiled in with Ozzy. The Hoochie’s more traditional blues take on Cream’s "Strange Brew" simply adds up to cool fun.
