Fire On The Moon

Sunday Herald Review (July 2006)

To be honest my only memories of this 1970 album are of the garish cover staring out at me in the second-hand bins. I should have picked it up, as vinyl copies now go for more than $600 - and one spin reveals why it is so prized by collectors.

The sound is a trippy mixture of British blues and heavy rock. The psychedelic lyrics are dated, but the sound is remarkably fresh, avoiding the turgid grind that plagued many prog-rock binds of the time. The obvious comparison is with supergroup Cream - one of the bonus tracks from a 2005 reunion show is a cover of Politician - with Bob Daisley's bass playing eerily similar to the distinctive fuzzy tone of Jack Bruce While Cream was a power trio, the four-piece Australian outfit features a pair of lead guitarists, Dennis Wilson and Tim Gaze, whose interplay is particularly impressive in the nine-minute closer Parade of Fools.
